A trailer for a documentary produced by right-wing culture warrior Tucker Carlson titled "The End of Men," had internet users questioning whether or not they were watching satire.

Masculinity has been undergoing a bit of an identity crisis for the last few years, as society reconsiders what it means to be a man, and what exactly defines a positive masculine role model. In some cases, this has led to dividing men into fictional sub-categories like Alpha, Beta, and the recently introduced “Sigma male.”

In the Joe Rogan media sphere, there’s an obsession with hormones, soybeans, and the supposedly feminizing effects of microplastics, and modernity in general. For men like Tucker Carlson, masculinity can be reduced to a mere aesthetic; Tucker’s documentary trailer is packed with images of topless men wrestling, chopping wood and firing guns.

The trailer also features a British narrator casually predicting the collapse of society, and the inevitable takeover of strong men, which doesn’t sound like fascism at all!

"Once a society collapses then, you're in hard times … those hard times inevitably produce men who are tough, men who are resourceful, men who are strong enough to survive. They go on to reestablish order, and so the cycle begins again."

It didn’t take long for Twitter users to point out the trailer’s homoerotic undertones.

Others wondered if it was actually legitimate, or a high-budget satire; the confusion was so widespread that Snopes even issued a confirmation that the trailer was real.

Indeed, the trailer is so absurd that it seems designed to go viral for the wrong reasons; at one point, a naked, muscular man even stands in front of a heating lamp with his arms outstretched, empowered by the heat cooking his testicles.

Carlson has actually been promoting the idea of “testicle tanning,” seemingly convinced that exposing their genitals to a heat lamp is exactly what today’s soft men need.

Carlson even pitched the concept to Kid Rock, one of Donald Trump’s few celebrity supporters, who seemed deeply confused; Kid Rock told the Fox News Host: “Dude, stop! Testicle tanning? Come on. I haven’t heard anything like that in a long time.”

“Open your mind, Bobby,” Carlson replied. “Don’t you think at this point when so many of the therapies, the paths they’ve told us to take, have turned out to be dead ends that really hurt people, why wouldn’t open-minded people seek new solutions?”

“I don’t know what the hell is going on in this world,” Rock said. “I’m not even sure if I understood that question. But some days you just want to stop this planet and let me off.”

For Carlson, whose job consists of sitting behind a desk, furrowing his brow, and frightening suburbanites with increasingly imaginative moral panics, it’s not hard to understand why he feels emasculated.

Perhaps the Fox News host could do with a good testicle tanning session.
