Separate the kernel to enable multi-level security for Link 16 situational awareness

Santa Barbara, California, December 14, 2021/PRNewswire/--Green Hills Software announced the deployment of INTEGRITY®-178 real-time on Lockheed Martin’s C-130J Special Task Display Processor (SMDP) The operating system (RTOS) is the US Air Force. SMDP requires RTOS to meet the Separated Kernel Protection Profile (SKPP) defined by the NSA to achieve "high robustness" security, thereby providing the ability to host multi-level security (MLS) applications.

Safety is the top priority of SMDP because it controls the flow of safe and unsafe information between aircraft systems and integrates Link 16 situational awareness into C-130J. SMDP is a centralized, scalable, high-performance processing system based on an open system architecture running INTEGRITY-178 RTOS. In addition to satisfying SKPP and hosting MLS applications, INTEGRITY-178 also provides an ARINC 653 partitioned software environment, which runs OpenGL ES-SC 1.0 graphics for the display. SMDP can combine TAXI video input from the task computer with Link 16 data to output Link 16 graphics superimposed on TAXI video.

"For more than two decades, INTEGRITY-178 has been the operating system of choice for tactical cross-domain solutions," said Dan O'Dowd, founder and CEO of Green Hills Software. "Starting from the Boeing B-1B avionics upgrade and Lockheed Martin F-35 security software, INTEGRITY-178 RTOS has an unparalleled high-robustness safety certification pedigree."

Green Hills Software's INTEGRITY-178 high-reliability real-time operating system is uniquely designed to meet the DO-178C DAL A airborne safety requirements and the separate kernel protection profile defined by the NSA. INTEGRITY-178 is the only commercial operating system that has obtained SKPP certification, which is completed by the national information assurance partner common standard EAL 6+ and NSA "high robustness". In addition to separating the kernel, INTEGRITY-178 also provides a complete set of APIs for multi-level security applications in the security zone, such as MLS protection, which is a basic requirement in a cross-domain system. The multi-core version of INTEGRITY-178 tuMP™ is also the first and only RTOS to be part of the NSA’s "Raise the Standards" program’s cross-domain solution certification. INTEGRITY-178 is the first commercial RTOS approved to meet DO-178B level A goals, and INTEGRITY-178 tuMP is the only RTOS that is part of the DO-178C and CAST-32A multi-core target multi-core certification. INTEGRITY-178 tuMP directly supports the modular open system approach. It is the first RTOS to pass the FACE™ technical standard version 3.0 certification.

Founded in 1982, Green Hills Software is a global leader in embedded safety and security. In 2008, Green Hills INTEGRITY-178 RTOS was the first and only operating system that passed NIAP (National Information Assurance Partnership composed of NSA and NIST) certified as EAL 6+, high robustness operating system, which is the highest ever Level of security software products. Our open architecture and integrated development solutions can meet deep embedded, safety/security and high reliability applications in military/avionics, medical, industrial, automotive, networking, consumer and other markets that require industry-certified solutions.
