Ford has launched its latest police vehicle which is based on the F-150 Lighting Pro EV pickup. The Special Service Vehicle (SSV) has received a number of modifications to support its new role as a police car, offered in standard or extended battery flavors.

Starting with the exterior, the F-150 Lighting Pro SSV gains a bull bar at the front bumper, roof-mounted warning beacons (LED lights), plus a fitting livery with “All-Electric Police Special Service Vehicle” lettering.

Inside, the seats are upholstered with police-grade heavy-duty cloth and have reduced side bolsters making it easier for holstered officers to enter and exit the vehicle. The rear seats have a vinyl upholstery that is easier to clean, like the vinyl flooring. The dashboard has a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch SYNC4 infotainment touchscreen alongside a reinforced instrument panel top tray that is designed for mounting additional police equipment.

Standard features also include the Ford Co-Pilot 360 ADAS suite and the Ford Pro platform with tools for more efficient fleet management. Besides the rear bed area, with the Pro Power onboard generator, officers can also utilize the Mega Power Frunk at the front, with 14.1 cubic feet of lockable cargo space and an additional 220-amp DC to DC power source.

Ford says that the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is designed “to handle specialized departmental needs outside of pursuit situations, such as assisting at an accident or crime scene, or giving departments the ability to tow a boat or a trailer”. Still, the automaker is offering the EV pickup in both standard-range and extended-range battery forms. The first produces 452 hp (337 kW / 458 PS) for a 7,700-pound towing capacity and the latter increases it to 580 hp (432 kW / 588 PS) for a 10,000-pound towing capacity. In both cases, torque is 775 lb-ft (1,051 Nm) with power transmitted to all four wheels.

Nate Oscarson, Ford Pro national government sales manager said: “We’re proud to offer America’s first electric police pickup truck to local government customers who can use the truck’s game-changing technology to help improve their productivity. Pro Power Onboard can serve as a mobile power source to light up evening accident scenes on the highway, the electric powertrain helps to potentially reduce costs associated with fuel and scheduled maintenance needs and the Mega Power Frunk provides extra lockable storage on top of purpose-built police additions our customers have come to expect from the leader in police vehicles.”

The detailed specifications of the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV will be released later this summer, although we don’t expect them to differ much from the standard non-police F-150 Lightning.
