Shovel Knight Dig, set to release in September, will take the iconic blue knight on a new quest through procedurally generated underground levels.

The indie roguelike Shovel Knight Dig, co-developed by Nitrome and Shovel Knight creator Yacht Club Games, has finally received a solid release date. Released in 2014, Shovel Knight is a 2D side-scrolling platformer that pays homage to classic Nintendo titles like The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario. Many consider Shovel Knight to be one of the most significant and influential indie games of all time, and an upcoming spinoff will see the titular hero break new ground.

After launch Shovel Knight was expanded with the addition of three DLC campaigns, with each adding a new playable character and new levels to explore. Now that work on the original game has been completed, Yacht Club Games has teamed up with other indie developers to create original new experiences starring the brave Shovel Knight. Shovel Knight Dig will serve as a roguelike adventure, for example, with players digging through procedurally generated levels and growing stronger over time as they journey to defeat Drill Knight. Late last year Yacht Club Games and Vine released Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, another spinoff that functions as a unique puzzle-based dungeon crawler.

A brand-new trailer for Shovel Knight Dig, posted to YouTube by Nitrome, reveals that the subterranean roguelike adventure will release on September 23. The exciting collaboration will see Shovel Knight dig deep to reclaim his stolen belongings and face the villainous Drill Knight. Combat seems to remain largely unchanged compared to the original game, with players using Shovel Knight's signature Shovel Blade to slash enemies and bounce around the environment. However, procedurally generated levels will add a new layer of excitement to each underground voyage. Shovel Knight Dig will launch on September 23 for PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.

While the developer has teamed up with other indie developers for new Shovel Knight games, earlier this year Yacht Club Games announced Mina the Hollower as its next solo project. Styled after classic 8-bit Game Boy Color titles, the gothic horror-inspired game will cast players as Mina, an adventurous mouse and genius inventor. The top-down action game promises to deliver fast-paced Castlevania-style gameplay, with Mina facing down foes with her whip and burrowing underground to rapidly traverse the battlefield. Yacht Club's exciting next game is expected to launch in late 2023, but Shovel Knight spinoffs can help hold fans over in the meantime.

Set to release on September 23, Shovel Knight Dig will take the beloved blue knight on a brand-new type of adventure. As players dig further underground they will encounter new threats and earn new rewards, creating an endlessly fun dungeon digging experience. The indie collaboration will be unearthed on PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices in just a few weeks.
